AS MY LUCK WOULD HAVE IT:

I got a parking ticket yesterday while I was in the post office sending my postcards out. $65 G-O-N-E!...

I'm going to try to look at the bright side, if I manage to book ONE job as a result of these postcards, it will pay for the parking ticket, AND the cost to print, label, and mail the postcards several times over.

My husband says he hates to see me get my hopes up when I send out postcards or attend a workshop or something like that, but the way I see it is, when SHOULD I get my hopes up, if not then?

Gotta keep it moving.

Good Start to a Long Week & I Saw/I Met...

Just back from my VO Audition. It went well. I had both of my kids in tow, each for unforseeable reasons, but I made it work as best I could. (They hung out in the lobby with the secretary, and the other actors, while I dashed into the booth.)

I followed up this morning with the job I interviewed for two weeks ago. I left a message. Hopefully someone while get back to me soon with a yah or nay.

I also followed up this morning about the ABC TALENT SHOWCASE. They said they'd called all the actors they were interested in, but one. What are the chances I'm that last one? Wishful thinking, I know. Oh well, movin on.

I finished the mailing list and labels for my postcards over the weekend, AND I picked up my postage today. I'm making progress. Slowly, but surely. (I tell ya, sometimes it takes me so long to get one task accomplished. Originally I'd planned to get these things out in July.) Well, I guess as long as it gets done. My plan (which if you've been reading my blog for any amount of time, you'll know will likely change....:)...) is to drop everything in the mail tomorrow. I predict audition after audition by the end of the week. Okay, I know, more wishful thinking.

I saw Lindsay Lohan on Saturday (9/23). The police had pulled over this big beautiful black Escalade on Pacific Coast Highway. As I glanced into the vehicle, (Yes, I rubbernecked!) I saw a bunch of girls who just looked like they had a lot of money. Then about 1/4 of a mile up the road I saw paparazzi snapping away! (Cool! I've never seen paparazzi before!) Anyway, I kept rolling, and thought to myself "That musta been Lindsay Lohan or somebody." My assumption would be confirmed about 15 mintues later when the same Escalade cut me off, and the same police car would jump behind her again. Okay, I thought, I'm going around slowly this time. I want to see who this is. I got a good look, and sure enough it was Lindsay Lohan. All I will say is, the city of Malibu should really think about taking her driver's license away, AND giving me that Escalade!...:)...

Peace.

What Box?

VO Audition - 9/25/06 - H&R BLOCK & AMSTERDAM GIN

I forced myself to think outside of the box yesterday, and as a result, I submitted myself for a project that would require me to cut off all my hair. Not a trim, not a couple of inches, but completely. Yes, the role called for a woman who’d be willing to go bald! Now that I’ve submitted myself, I’m scared to death that they’re going to call me in. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Within 30 minutes of submitting myself for the project above, I’m on the phone with one of my voice over agents. She’s asking me if I want to step even further outside of the box by reading for a few PlayBoy spots today. Agh, NO WAY!...:)...I ain’t that crazy! I can quickly see something like that coming back to haunt me one day.

After work yesterday my husband and I caught a matinee showing of GRIDIRON GANG. I’m not a huge fan of sports related movies, but this is definitely a must see! It was inspiring on many different levels. As an actor, I just love to see a slew of unknowns knock one out the park!...Pun intended...(Although this is a football movie, and not a baseball movie.)

Whatever! Have a great weekend!

Another Day, Another Dollar & I Saw/I Met...

For those of you who may have been worried about me: I'M FINE! Work has been okay so far. I think the toughest part has been getting up at 5:45am everyday, and trying to get out the door by 7:15am. My routine has completely changed, but I'm getting used to it. Kenyah is adjusting very well at daycare, (I'm VERY happy about that!) The whole experience has been a huge relief, because it turns out I wasn't paranoid about leaving her like I thought I'd be.

In other news, I picked up my postcards after work on Monday. They are BEAUTIFUL! I will never go anywhere else to have my postcards printed up. Seriously. I've been working on my mailing list every chance I get, and I intend to mail them out this weekend. I decided that I'm going to do one mass mailing, instead of small groups like I'd said a couple of weeks ago. I really hope that I get a few calls from them.

I haven't heard anything since last week about the job I interviewed for.

---

I can't remember if it was 1995 or 1996 that he enrolled at UNM, all I know was, I was back home from NYU, and still not the most pleased that I was working toward a degree in Theater at UNM, and not the school of my dreams: NYU. You see in 1994, at 17 years old, I was accepted to NYU: Tisch School of the Arts. Unfortunately, severe culture shock, a bad cold, and the asthma attack that followed, sent me crying home to my mom and dad just six short weeks after arriving in the big apple. Since I was back home, and had to do SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE WITH ME LIFE, I decided to enroll in the Theater Program at UNM until I could plan my next move.

When I walked into acting class one day, he was already seated. I immediately thought to myself: "Gee, that guy looks really familiar. Where do I know him from?" It wouldn't take me very long after the teacher asked him to introduce himself that I would remember. During the 1994/1995 television season, there was one show that my mom and I HAD to watch every week without fail. It was called EARTH 2. Ever heard of it? Probably not. We watched it partly because it was filmed in New Mexico, partly because I was completely obsessed with Antonio Sabato Jr. at the time, and partly because it was a pretty good concept for a show.

One day while watching, I caught a glimpse of Rockmond Dunbar's character. I remember laughing with my mom about the fact that he was the only black person that'd made it to "EARTH 2". So of course when I remembered who he was that day in class, I thought it was totally cool that there was a "real actor" in our midst. I, in true Shenita form, introduced myself after class, and chatted with him about his experience on the show. (It's funny because looking at his resume now, it seems as if that was one of the first projects he'd done professionally.) Anyway, as quickly as he'd joined our class, he'd leave a few weeks later. Where to? Noone knew exactly.

Cut to sometime in late 1997/early 1998, just after I'd moved to L.A. I was having a late night breakfast with several of my friends at the Denny's on the corner of Sunset and Gower. Out of nowhere my friend Rodney, who had gone outside to have cigarette, came running inside saying that Minnie Driver (I think, or was it Winona Ryder?) was having a birthday part at Pinot Hollywood across the street. He said that he'd walked inside, right past the security folks, and had hob nobbed with the elite for a little while. Of course he knew we wouldn't believe him, so he'd come back to take us over there. He wasn't lying, we got in with no problems, and although the party was almost over, the room still had some celebrities in it. Minnie Driver, John Cusack, and yes, Rockmond Dunbar. As soon as I locked eyes with him, we remembered each other immediately. We exchanged numbers.

Rockmond and I became very good friends, and he was part of my inner circle the first couple of years I was here in L.A. It's because of him I got to meet people like Ben Affleck, Taye Diggs, and Tanika Ray to name a few. Unfortunately, we lost contact again when he catapulted to stardom.

I ran into him again in 2002, when I was pregnant with my oldest daughter. At the time he was working on SOUL FOOD the television series. (Speaking of SOUL FOOD, it's funny because I knew he had that role before he even did. Crazy huh? More on that another time.) Anyway, we didn't exchange numbers that day, but I'm not at all concerned about that. I'm sure, or I should say I KNOW, we'll run into each other again.

Movin' on Up...

Finally finished my postcard the other day! I placed the order, and will pick them up sometime early next week. How does it look?

Earlier today I was left a message about the job interview I went on on Monday. "They haven't made any final decisions yet, but I'm still in the running."

And just now, I happened to login to my SAG account and discovered that I have several surprises coming my way.

In my best NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE voice: "SWEET!"

I'm told we made the cut...:)...It airs at 2:30pm here in L.A.

BRINGING HOME BABY - PREACHER'S SECOND

P.S. The job interview went very well on Monday! I'm still waiting to hear back, but in the meantime, I will be going back to my day job next Monday (9/18). Pray for me!...

Week in Review.

Thursday (8/31): I went to visit my agent’s office. Once there, it occurred to me that I hadn't been there in over a year! Yes, a whole year! Wow. That got me to thinking that one of the reasons that I haven’t been going out as much as I’d like to, is probably because I’m not a constant presence over there. I really need to step up my game in that regard, stay in their faces! Like, “Hey, look, I’m over here! Pick me! Choose me! Love me!"...:)...(Some of you got that one, huh?)...

We chit chatted for a while, and everyone got to gush over the baby. I was a little timid about bringing up some of the more serious issues I had on my mind though. I don’t know why I always wimp out when it comes to talking about stuff like that face to face. I guess I just don't like confrontations. Anyway, during the course of the meeting it was revealed that they had not received the packet of new (old) headshots I’d sent to them a couple of weeks prior. (What?!?) All this time I thought they’d been submitting me with them. Great. More time lost. Long story short, they didn’t get the packet of headshots until two days ago (9/7). I’m too through trying to understand why stuff like that continues to happen to me. Theoretically, the pictures should have gotten to them the next day. I mean I was only sending them across town. But anyway...

When I left their office, I hit up Reproductions on my way home, only to find out that my postcard wasn’t the right dpi. Great, here we go again. The guy told me that he couldn’t change it for me. I had to change it myself, and bring it back. I explained to him that coming to Studio City was a long way for me, and he said that I could e-mail it to him. I asked if I could at least pay him while I was there, and he said, I could pay over the phone. So, as you may have guessed, I STILL have not had the time to make these changes and get the darn postcards done. Again, more time lost!

Friday (9/1): After seeing the trailer for the movie THE ILLISIONIST that morning, I was determined to see it over the weekend. Needless to say my husband and I got to the theater a little later than we’d hoped, so we went with our second choice, IDLEWILD. The best way I can describe it is: “Imagination come to life.” I am so glad we saw that film. Definitely check that movie out if you can.

Saturday (9/2): I got an e-mail from the folks over at ITA Productions saying that a certain big name talent agency was seeking new clientele for their roster, and they specifically requested that ITA people submit. Cool. Hopefully I’ll at least get to audition for them. I got my h/r in the mail lickety split!

Sunday (9/3) thru Wednesday (9/6): Worked on my new website for the New Mexico acting market.

Thursday (9/7): Okay, so I haven’t talked about it lately, because I’ve been trying to push it towards the very back of my mind, but reality has set in that 9/18 is just around the corner. Yes, 9/18. The day I have to head back to my day job. BUT, all is not lost. A couple of weeks ago, I submitted both my resumes, acting and professional, for a job that would involve the need for both. I won’t go into too many details, but they e-mailed me on this day saying that I have an interview on 9/11. Wish me luck; because if I score this job, which I think just might be a dream day job, I plan to leave my other one. This job is great in that it would allow me, among other things, to make my own schedule.

Friday (9/8): VO Audition.

Next week should be interesting. Stay tuned...

Monday (9/11): Acting-related job interview.
Tuesday (9/12): GREY'S ANATOMY - Season 2 on DVD.
Wednesday (9/13): BRINGING HOME BABY airing.

Get much, much more of my agenda accomplished.

Pre-Order GREY'S ANATOMY - Season 2 DVD

http://abctvstore.seenon.com/detail.php?p=9386&v=abcgry

I still haven't seen any dough from Season 1 DVD sales, but I'm sure it'll be coming sometime soon. At least I hope so!
