A Change is Gon Come.

Last week ended up being a serious mommy week for me. Thursday (1/12), I'd RSVP'd for a screening of PROOF with a Q/A with Gwyneth Paltrow to follow, and on Friday (1/13) I'd RSVP'd for a screening of MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA with a Q/A with Ziyi Zhang to follow. Let's just say a low grade fever on Thursday (me) and lack of a baby sitter on Friday (for my daughter) caused me to sit out both nights. Drats! I saw on Entertainment Tonight Friday night that the media and paparazzi were all over the place at the PROOF screening. That would have been cool to experience. I had a day dream that had I of gone, Gwyneth would have noticed me in the audience as a fellow mommy-to-be. She and I would have compared belly's and stories about morning sickness...:)...

Next week, I have RSVP'd for the RIZE screening on Wednesday (1/18) with a Q/A with David LaChapelle to follow. I'm not missing that one.

I've updated the main page of my website:
  • The BackStage West issue will hit news stands on January 27, 2006.
  • Remember the Honor Society in High School? Well, in March I will be a judge at the International Theater Honor Society Festival. How cool is that? It should be fun.
  • Lastly, we got an air date for the BLACK FILMMAKER SHOWCASE 2006, in which BROOKLYN'S BRIDGE TO JORDAN will make it's television debut.

Now on a serious note...

If you've been following my blog for any amount of time, you'd know that since last summer I have had a major challenge with getting my commercial and theatrical agents to do much of anything of significance for me. Something happened, I'm not sure what exactly, but the gusto that was there for me in the beginning of our working relationship is long gone.

So, unfortunately, the time has come for me to move on. I've been putting it off for some time now because I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, and to be honest, I'm a little terrified. Terrified of not finding another agent anytime soon. But, my brother in law (he's a preacher) made a good point this morning at church that got me thinking. He said, "Some women believe that it's better to have a piece of a man, than no man at all, and that's just not true!" And that reminded me of this situation. I think I've fallen into the belief that it's better to have a piece of an agent, than no agent at all. And as a result, I have probably missed out on more opportunities than I care to think about.

A fellow actor friend of mine reminded me the other day that life is way too short, and this business is waaayyy to competitive to be fooling around with agents who don't believe in you. Plain and simple.

If you're thinking, "Wow, you hid your frustrations pretty well Shenita." I'll second that. It's taken me 9 months. Yes, 9 months, that's when "the change" happened, to finally come to terms with the fact that it's time to move on. All I can do is step out on faith, and I'm finally ready to do that.

The letter will be in the mail on Tuesday (1/17)...

So, I figure I'll take the next few months to finish cooking my little one, and do some work on myself as an actor. Get things ready for the fall. Submit myself here and there when I see some pregnancy roles come through the pipeline, and just see what happens.

I'm still on the hunt for a manager, so he/she just might help me score new representation. I'll still be doing VO's, Lord Willing! I'll still be over at ITA Productions (where they have Agent Fests all the time) and, I just a couple of bites from agents in New Mexico that I might work with when I'm in the area. (I bought a house down there last year.) I also want to make the transition to a full-time actor after my baby is born, so I have a lot to work on over the next few months. A lot of changes are gon come...

I think I'm ready...

PS: I'll be at the RIZE screening as well, perhaps we can find each other beforehand.
